Coffee Bars- Jump On The Tea Train Before Its Too Late!

by Dawnya Sasse

Your coffee sales may excite you, but why let the tea train pass you by? Tea sales may surpass coffee sales.

If you're involved in the coffee business, you've no doubt enjoyed the popularity of specialty coffees and the flavorful, fun options that have evolved over recent years.

If you're interested in seeing your business continue to grow, consider adding or expanding your selection of teas.

If you own a coffee shop or any other type of coffee business, you can do yourself a great favor by increasing your tea line.

Tea sales are in the billions of dollars each year, with sales expected to reach ten billion dollars annually by the year 2010 and the mark-up on loose teas is high as well offering great promise to any coffee business.

Embrace the loose tea renaissance and become as much of an expert in tea as you are in coffee to attract a wide range of customers.

If you provide the best tea and best selection available, you can create a unique experience that combines the highest quality coffee and tea around.

This in turn will attract both coffee and tea connoisseurs alike which means more money in your coffee house tills.

Tea trends, just like coffee trends, are varied and growing. Many tea choices go beyond the traditional cup of tea to incorporate a variety of flavors and combinations.

Chai tea as well as many specialty tea based drinks are now offered in bars and restaurants. Take a cue from these businesses and offer specialty, alcohol free tea cocktails. Your customers can appreciate this option any time of day.

In general, consumers are looking for healthy alternatives to other beverages and treats. Tea provides one such option, and because it is available in variety of qualities and flavors, is an easy product to offer with minimal costs.

Consider featuring some of the best of each category of tea, such as black, green, oolong, or white. Also, consider offering teas from around the world.

You can have a global selection that includes some of the most favorite and flavorful options. Take time to learn about specialty teas from around the world. You can offer your patrons a tea expert much like those who "know" wine and other beverages or specialty foods.

Tea can be a luxurious way to relax and spend time with friends, and many coffee houses can benefit from adding this option to their list of beverages.

The point is to move beyond prepackaged or traditional teas; expanding your tea repertoire to include more fun and exotic teas--just as you have likely done with coffee.

Have fun experimenting with the wide range of flavorful teas, and consider the options you can create throughout the seasons.

Consider a hot, spicy brew in winter and a fun iced tea option in the summer. As with hot teas, you can expand iced tea beyond the basics.

Many restaurants are offering a variety of fruity iced teas, and as the tea connoisseur, you can expand this into many new and exciting creations.

Consider offering your teas in authentic and interesting presentations as well. From pyramid tea bags to tea lattes. Your patrons will enjoy the comfort provided by these presentations and will appreciate the uniqueness of the beverage.

The tea business is growing, as are tea trends. Do yourself and your business a favor by getting involved now. Just as coffee soared to great heights, so too will teas. Get the education you need to succeed today then sit back and enjoy the ride with a great cup of tea.

Hosting a 1950s Inspired Tea Party

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Flash back to the golden age of T.V. and Radio by offering guests of any age a 1950's tea party. A 1950's theme will easily lend itself to creativity, but needn’t cost a lot or take a great deal of preparation.

To help set the tone, encourage guests to dress accordingly. If you plan to host a variety of themed tea parties, you may want to visit the local thrift shop or antique store for clothing.

This way, guests who are so inclined can throw on a sweater or change into some bowling shoes. If you're able to provide some costuming, your guests will have no reason not to attend.

Activities

Depending on the amount of room available and where the party is held, there are a number of 1950s inspired activities to choose from.

With minimal space, you can let guests play with hula-hoops or lip sync to 1950s music classics. You can watch classic “I Love Lucy” episodes or listen to classic radio comedies available from www.Radiospirits.com

Alternatively, set the tone of a drive-in movie using cardboard cutouts of movie stars and have speakers set at each table. Activate your imagination and the sky is the limit. Tea tasting will be, of course, a primary activity. Black teas were most common during the 1950s, so consider offering a variety of these teas.

Offer unique blends of black teas that your guests may not be familiar with. But be sure to serve an herbal option those wishing to avoid caffeine.

You can have a lot of fun with the origins of teas. Until the Korean War, the U.S. imported most of its black tea from India.

During and after the war, Argentina became as primary source. Offer your guests a wide range of black teas from around the world. They may be surprised at the selection!

Decorations

Decorations can be done quite easily as well. For example, you can create a "sock hop" theme with a few lights and a "jukebox."

Add some posters of 1950s icons and you're good to go! With a few low-cost decorations, you can create a theme for any inspiration from the period, such as bowling balls and bins decorating the sides of the room, toy cars from the time, or even a "homey" feel giving the room a "Leave it to Beaver" flair.

Many party stores have cutout figures of jukeboxes and 1950s icons, which can be fun to place around the party and are affordable.

You can also use any of the 1950s inspired clothing and shoes as decoration. Simple "home" decorations can also be included, as the 1950s Americana focused on family values. Depending on your budget, you may be able to pick-up some great 1950s furniture at thrift stores or flea markets.

Music

There is a lot of wonderful music to choose from! A 1950s compilation may be the simplest, but other suggestions include Elvis Presley, Connie Francis, Mary Wells, Patsy Cline, the Supremes, Debbie Reynolds, Bill Haley and the Comets, Ray Charles, Chuck Berry...the list goes on! The activities of your party will influence music selections.

If you're hosting dance hop, then some of the popular "pop" songs of the day are good choices. If you're using music for background, then anything from the 1950s will work.

Invitation

Ideas with "retro" a hot theme these days, it is possible to find invitations that have some type of 1950s reference, whether it is a sock-hop theme, jukebox, or poodle skirt. These can be a fun way to get people's attention and are affordable.

Foods

Think Betty Crocker and soda fountains! Many of the primary foods served in the 1950s were traditional meat and potato style meals. Barbecue was also big. These foods may be a bit heavy for a tea party, so consider using scaled-down appetizers.

If you don't want to make a big fuss, consider the sweet route; many candies that were popular in the 1950s can be found today, such as wax lips, Necco wafers, licorice snaps, and bubble gum.

Also, think about ways to get creative when serving teas, such as using tall sundae dishes or mugs. While Chai teas were not the custom of the time, they can make a great presentation in a sundae dish.

Creativity is the key to any successful tea party and a 1950's theme is just the same. Take these ideas and run with them, let your imagination go wild and be sure to email me with your 1950s fun.

Books and Tea ~ Creating a Literary Tea Party

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Is there anything quite as comforting as curling up with a good book and a cup of tea? Doing it with a group of clients! Hosting a book tea party can be a great way to experiment with some cozy teas and share some great books. (not to mention sell a few!)

You can have a quiet party where guests can read, or combine a reading and sharing party, exchanging tea and book ideas, or conducting readings. There are a number of options to choose from.

A book party can be a very special event, offering clients a unique opportunity that cannot be found elsewhere. Because it is a private by reservation event, your guests can enjoy the feel of a teahouse without all the distractions.

Activities

In addition to tasting teas, you can allow your guests to quietly read (sometimes people need a good "excuse" to take some quiet time!), or you can offer a range of activities.

Consider having a group discussion on a particular book or conducting a book swap where guests bring a book by a favorite author to trade.

You can listen to stories, having guests read or listen to an author read his or her works on tape. If there is a local author in your area, invite him or her to do a private reading for your party. Or have a party based on a literary character or specific book, such as Sherlock Holmes or Scarlet O'Hara.

Decorations

The atmosphere for this type of party should be warm, comfortable, and inviting. Set the mood through lighting and furniture rather than through decorations.

Scatter some books throughout the room as well to help set the tone. Use low lighting, and if guests will be spending quiet time reading, try to have some type of light available at each setting.

You can also hang posters of or references to famous authors or literary characters. If you're able to host the party in a personal library or room with a lot of bookshelves, this will also help create a reading atmosphere.

If hosting the event in your tea bar or tea room be sure to create cozy nooks for delving into the great American novel.

Music

Light classical is a perfect choice for this type of party. If you're doing a themed party based on a character or book, look for music that fits the theme, such as something more mysterious or mystical.

Stringed instruments are a nice choice, as they create soft music that makes for a pleasant background. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is one such example, as is Pachelbel's Canon.

Invitation Ideas

Invitations shaped like a book are a good choice, or if you are using a character or specific book, incorporate pictures into the invitations.

If you can't find a book invitation or don't want to make them, look for invitations that incorporate a reading or writing theme, such as pens or bookshelves.

Promote the event early and pass out invitations to your current customers. Mail private invitations to your most loyal clientele.

Foods

The food you serve can be almost anything you want. Baked goods lend themselves to the cozy atmosphere, such as biscotti or Danishes.

If you focus on a particular book, choose foods that are featured in the story. Chocolates are also a great choice, and some go very well with teas.

Teas

There is nothing like a good book and a hot cup of tea! For this event, try a traditional smoky tea like a Lapsang Souchong, or if you would rather go with a classic, nothing's better than a good cup of Earl Grey.

These teas are both available through www.Specialteas.com.

Sales

Last but not least think ahead and offer your clients "buying options" Consider gift baskets filled with next months book and a matching tea. If you sell numerous books consider offering a private sale during your literary event.

Creating a book club or a regular literary tea time may provide just the ticket you need to gain regular customers and fantastic media exposure.

Big Fat Greek Wedding Tea Party

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Hosting a Greek "Big Fat Wedding" themed tea party is a great way to experience wonderful cuisine and a bit of Greek culture.

Whether you are throwing the party for a bride-to-be or want to have a get-together to enjoy good food and teas, a Greek party is a fun way to spend time with friends and family.

Whatever the purpose, a Greek themed tea party is a time to appreciate the wonders of Greek culture and the country's rich history and traditions. This could be anything from mythological stories to modern-day weddings.

Use the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" as inspiration and let your imagination flow!

Activities

Hosting a dinner is a great way to sample Greek food and the perfect accompanying teas. It gives guests a chance to socialize and sample teas they may not normally try.

Watching the movie is a perfect activity as well! Also consider incorporating traditional wedding rituals. Hold the party of a Sunday, for example, as Greek weddings are almost always held on Sundays.

Then give your guests small bags of candy-coated almonds, wrapped in netting, another Greek wedding tradition--but be sure there are an odd number of candies in each bag!

Encourage guests to dress in traditional Greek folk costumes or in the colors of the flag.

Decorations

Use the Greek flag for inspiration. Hang flags, photos of traditional costumes, and posters of Greece throughout the room.

Use the colors of the Greek flag, blue and white, throughout your decorations, table linens, and serving dishes.

You can also incorporate gold throughout the table settings and decorations, including gold accent pieces and candles.

Music

There are many easy choices for music for your party, such as the soundtrack from the movie, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."

You could also use a compilation CD, such as "Hot Summer Nights: Favorite Greek Music" or "The Dance of Heaven's Ghosts." If you would like to use something by famous Greek artists, consider "Nana Mouskouri - At Her Very Best" or "Theodorakis: Zorba's Ballet."

If you are looking for a relaxing evening or something perfect for after dinner, try "Yanni - Live at the Acropolis." With a selection or two from the above, you can easily set the mood for your party.

Invitation Ideas

You can buy a number of Greek inspired invitations, including everything from the Greek flag to the Olympics, famous ancient buildings, and mythological figures. If you're feeling creative, you may want to make your own incorporating the colors of blue, white, and gold.

Foods

Greek food is a wonderful mix of Mediterranean ingredients such as olives, olive oil, lemon, eggplants, lamb, honey, seafood and herbs.

Begin with some traditional appetizers and finger foods including olives, feta and other cheeses, and grilled eggplant. Mini pies are also an option, made with fish, eggs, or tomatoes. Follow this with a Greek salad featuring shrimp, and serve lamb for the main course.

End with a relaxing post-dinner tea and dessert such as baklava!

For recipes and lists of traditional Greek foods, browse through any Greek recipe book or do a quick search online for traditional Greek foods. There are so many wonderful options to choose from!

Or, if you'd like to take the easier route, consider having some or part of it catered from your local Greek restaurant for a bit of authenticity.

Teas

Spicy Greek Foods should be paired with a hearty black tea such as a Keemun or an Assam.

Talk to the experts at www.Harney.com for a suggestion fit for a wedding.  Or get in the wedding spirit and buy all of your guests wedding tea tins, which are also available from www.Harney.com.

A Tea Party for Every Season

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Celebrating the seasons with a tea party is a natural way to transition from one cycle to the next.

Teas were traditionally available as the seasons changed, and honoring the natural growth cycle of tea plants is a fun way to share seasonal teas with friends and family. It is also a great way to sample teas that you or your guests may not be familiar with.

It is now possible to grow all types of teas year-round, and as such, many people fall into a "tea rut." Using the seasons to mix up your teas may lead to your next favorite blend.

As the seasons change, there's no better reason to host a tea party! Teas are enjoyable year-round, and you'll find yourself with all sorts of reasons to host a tea party.

One such example is to share the wonders of the different types of teas that lend themselves to each season. Light, fruity teas are perfect for the summer, while heartier teas are a great comfort in winter.

Activities

Hosting a seasonal tea party can incorporate any of the season's traditional activities, or it can be anything else you want it to be!

Guests may enjoy brewing their own, experimenting with different preparation methods, or learning about teas from around the world for each season. Incorporate different tea traditions for the teas you are serving.

Alternatively, consider celebrating a seasonal element, such as a solstice or holiday.

Decorations

How you decorate for your party will depend on the season and if you are a focusing on a particular theme. Should you celebrate the change of seasons or a solstice party, focus on decorations that represent the upcoming season.

As spring moves into summer, for example, a wide array of wildflowers may be available. Choose bright, cheery colors and lightweight table settings and linens. If you are in the midst of winter, deeper colors are more appropriate, as well as heavier table settings, such as hearty mugs or heavy glasses.

Consider all aspects of your decor when planning your party.

Use decorations from nature. Pinecones are great in winter, flowers in spring and summer, and wheat or other harvest items in the fall. Incorporate colors of each season, using pastels in spring, bright colors in fall, browns and oranges in fall, and deep colors in winter.

Music

Music selections for your parties can vary greatly. Consider "The Four Seasons" for fun! There are also a number of other seasonal music compilations or selections based on a particular season, such as George Winston's CDs.

A trip to your local music store or a quick online search can lead you to a number of seasonal music selections.

Invitation Ideas

Choose invitations based on the time of year. Coordinate your colors and consider making your own invitations using specialty papers that represent your theme.

Commercial invitations may work just as well, however, so there's no need to rule them out if you're not keen on the idea of creating your own. You may find that the perfect seasonal invitation already exists.

Foods

What should you serve at a seasonal tea party? Rely on natural foods that are available during the time of year and work those into your offerings as much as possible.

Obviously, this may be easier during some months than others, but it provides a good starting place. Use a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and create complimentary main dishes or appetizers.

There are a number of cookbooks available that focus on seasonal foods and these can be a good reference source if you're stuck for ideas. An online search may also be useful.

Teas

During the winter and cooler months, hearty teas like Yunnan, Assam or Keemun warm the palate and the body.  You can even pick from this years crop by going to www.TeaSource.com.

A refreshing green tea like Mountain Spring Jasmine is perfect for summer months, or perhaps a fruit filled herbal such as Wild Berries and Blossoms, which offers an excellent cup of iced pleasure. Both of these teas are available from www.MightyLeaf.com.

What I Learned About The Tea Business From Jerry Seinfeld

by Dawnya Sasse

As a disciplined tea business owner, I find myself answering the phone day in and day out.

It is rarely a job I savor, so the phone rang a few month ago and my sister screamed into the earpiece "Jerry is coming to Portland!" "Aren't you excited?"

I probably had a less than enthusiastic reply.

You see, my sister has loved Jerry Seinfeld for years and years. Her daughter was even born on Mr. Seinfelds birthday.( which was taken as a very positive sign.) I, on the other hand had other things to spend my $100 on then tickets to see Jerry.

BUT- I love my sister so, my husband, and I bought tickets to Jerry Seinfeld's Portland Oregon show.

The moment Jerry slid onto the stage it hit me! I wasn't just at this show for a few good laughs. I was here to learn...and learn I did.

The first thing I noticed was Jerry's amazing command over the audience. He knew his audience. He knew what they liked and didn't like. Knew that they loved his routines about every day life (also known as comedy about nothing!) and that with the correct recipe ( a dash of polictics, a bit of personal stories and a bunch of everymans reality) "whala!" he would have a stage sensation.

So what does this have to do with the tea business?

To succeed in the tea business you have to know your audience and your audience has to know you. No longer can the independent business man or woman hide behind thier logo.

No, it is time to get out there and entertain your clients. What do they like? What don't they like? How can you relate to them? Great stand up comedians command their audience and so can you!

Now wait a minute...

I am not saying develop a stand up comedy routine. No! I am saying know your business audience and let them learn to relate to you.

Become the center of attention in your own arena. Pretty soon you will be amazed by all the people paying $100 a pop to be apart of your business.

I think that we, the general public, often forget that actors are small business people too. I was raised by musicians on the road. We were responsible to get our own gigs, develop new clients, (audience) new product lines (music) and keep the customers HAPPY!

So can you.

Take a quick second and make a decision.

What one thing can you do to connect with your clients this week?

Send a postcard?

Have an impromptu "open house"

Start a blog?

Mail a "thank you" coupon?

Make your audience stand up and beg for more. It works for Jerry and I know it will work for you!

5 Tips for Boosting Your Tea Business

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Alright, let's look at our calendars. Yes, time is flying, the new year is passing faster than you can holler "loose leaf tea." But fear not!

All you need is 5 easy steps to get back on track with your tea business. Let's take a look:

Tip #1: Gain New Customers

Gaining new customers may seem like an obvious statement but often times it is easier to focus on our current customers then attracting potential ones.

How can we attract new customers without spending a lot of cash? Here are some suggestions.

-Send out monthly PSA's (Public Service Announcements) to the various media in your area. This includes radio stations, newspapers (small, large and niche), television and local or national magazines. Let the media know what you are doing and how they can participate. You have not because you ask not. You never know when a PSA will turn into a full fledged article.

-Network with established business people. Find a chamber or entreprenuer group and become active. Shake hands and listen. What do they need? Do they need food? Do they need a place to meet? Do they need event planning? Find a way to offer your business services. You will be surprised how far simple networking will get you if you give it time.

-MEDIA! MEDIA! MEDIA! How can you put your name in front of thousands of potential customers? All media sources need good human interest stories. Did you donate 10% of your profit to a local school or charity? Are you offering a Tea Tasting class where all proceeds go to a just cause? Find a way to peak local media's interest while supporting a good cause. This is a win/win situation.

Tip # 2: Encourage Old Customers

Loyal customers make or break a business. What have you been doing for yours? This month make a special effort to remind your customers of who you are and how much you appreciate them.

Do you remember Princess Diana? Princess Diana was known as the people's princess. She was personable and involved. Every evening Princess Di wrote personal thank you notes. She practiced giving back and so can you.

-Send a personally written thank you card to each of your regular customers. (yes, this may take a lot of time but break it up over the weeks and months.) Just seeing that you cared enough to write will make your clients more loyal than ever.

-Host a "Thank You" event. Do you want to say thanks in a memorable way? Host an event and offer FREE tickets to your core clientele. Your effort on their behalf will not go unnoticed.

Tip #3: Find a "New" Product

Every season is a new opportunity to re-aquaint the public with your business. Offer something special each quarter to keep the traffic flowing. If you have a shop offer new products and tea blends. If home tea parties is your business, create new seasonal themed parties.

The choice is yours just get creative!

Tip #4: Streamline Your System

It is time to take stock of your energy drains. Are there little things that slow you down? Here are a few questions to ask yourself and then act upon and change:

-What is holidng me back in my business?

-What 3 things do I need to change and why haven't I done it?

-How would the business I would like to be do the things I need to do?

-What is the number one task I am avoiding?

Tip #5: Set Specific Goals

Are you a Phoebe (let it happen as it comes) or a Monica (PLAN, PLAN, PLAN!)

Discover your true tendencies and overcome obstacles. If you are a Phoebe and you hate the word goals.. think of this instead as executing specific projects.

What do you need to get done and when? The best way to easily acheive a "project" is by setting a firm deadline. Think of it now in your head. Got it?

Now work backwards on your calendar. Think of all the specific steps it will take to acheive your goal. When would each of the steps need to be done in order to reach the deadline?

Working backward, step by step, can help you move forward quickly. Be daring, push yourself, reach for the stars.

I know you can do it!

Discover the FREEDOM of an Online Tea Business

by Dawnya Sasse

Imagine getting up in the morning, starting your day with a fresh cup of tea, and walking a few feet to work, still in your pajamas!

It's not a bad way to work, and if you do it right, you can operate one of the hottest businesses around, right from your computer.

A home-based tea business provides an excellent opportunity to work from home and generate a healthy income.

The tea business is booming, with current annual sales at billions of dollars and growing.

People are buying teas for many reasons, including health and as flavorful alternatives.

Teas are also making their way into specialty drinks and cooking ingredients, so the options are almost endless.

For those wishing to work from home in the tea business, an online store is a simple way to develop a strong online business presence. More and more people are joining the Internet every day, and online shopping is a preferred method for many people.

You do not have to leave the house only to find out that the store does not have exactly what you are looking for, or wait in long lines if it does.

Shoppers appreciate the convenience as much as do retailers. If you conduct your business well, you can create a niche for yourself (this can be something as simple as being the best-informed tea expert available), and if you provide quality service, you can develop a very successful online business.

Further, if you sell loose teas (or a combination of loose and prepackaged), the markup is big, and so you can realize profits quickly. The start-up costs for operating a home-based tea business are minimal, especially when compared to running a tearoom that requires rent (and you can write off part of your home payment as a business expense).

If you will be keeping inventory, you will need to stock a reasonable amount and have enough storage space. You may also be able to work out an agreement with a wholesaler to have teas shipped directly from the producer, which makes your storage needs even smaller.

Developing a website will be your greatest expense if you are running an Internet-only business. It needs to attract the attention of online shoppers, and you need to set yourself apart from the competition.

It is worth spending the money to hire professionals who can develop an attractive site and help you with marketing strategies to bring business to your site. Even so, the cost of a quality website will still be lower than the cost of starting a tearoom or retail store.

As with any online business, you'll need to consider ways to make your business seem friendly and safe. While many people shop online these days, a website needs to look professional and safe from hackers in order for people to feel safe shopping.

Investigate the numerous ways to accept payments online and choose the one that best suits your needs. Again, the money you spend in developing your site is well spent. Shoppers will not be comfortable giving you their credit card information if your site appears amateurish.

Research your business and ways to market an online company. This includes not only general business information, but also the tea industry itself. If you are an expert in teas, customers will feel more comfortable shopping in your store.

Also, consider including free information on your site that demonstrates your thorough understanding of the business.

Because you can't talk to your shoppers in person, this allows customers to get a sense of who you are and to realize that you know your stuff. Also, consider an easy return policy, as this also builds trust with your customers.

Queen Mary lived from 1867-1953 and was the consort of George the 5th. Mary, private and shy in public, was known for her spirited teatime which she held daily at the palace and is said to have adored.

Every day at 4 p.m. Queen Mary presided over tea time in Buckingham Palace.

Her formal tea table was set with a silver tea set known to have been a favorite of her mother in law, Queen Victoria.

As her guests watched in awe, Mary would measure her custom made tea blend from a small jade colored caddy and personally brew the tea for her adoring guests. Then the Queen would nod to her footmen and they would fill all the teacups and pass a variety of savories and sweets all around.

On informal daily occasions Queen Mary would often use her favorite teapot made by John Beswick Ltd. and entitled "Sundial."

She chose this pot on a trip to Beswick pottery. From then on the pottery firm always stamped their "Sundial Teapot" to read..."As purchased by HM Queen Mary."

Now how's that for a bit of creative tea business marketing?

Turn Discouragement into Triumph in the Tea Business

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Have you ever been discouraged? I mean tail dragging, feel like you have been beaten by a stick discouraged?

Did you dream of a successful tea business only to be left picking up the pieces of a shattered reality?

Have you ever felt like everything that once mattered to you is meaningless, hopeless and without a future?

Have you lived in a dry and thirsty land where there is no water, no purpose and no vision?

Have you been broken?

I have.

Discouragement, doubt and defeat go hand in hand with the entrepreneurial spirit. I can't count how many times I have thought of walking away and getting a "real job."

Sometimes, discouragement doesn't come from our business but from our outside world. Our family, our friends, our own household is stretching and straining and it just seems easier to give up than to go on.

Are you there?

If you are, I have a word for you. It is a simple word that changed my life in 1991 and has seen me through some very dark times. The word is "process."

We are all in process. We are not finished yet. The place where you are today is not the end of the journey.

It may feel like the end, you may long for the end, but the place where you are right now is part of the process. You are in process.

I am in process.

When I finally grasped the concept of embracing the "process" I understood that all of the burdens, all of the high expectations, all of the perfectionism that I lived under could be the tool that God might use to reveal the diamond in my life.

Being in process means I am no longer responsible to be perfect right now. I may not have the ultimate home, business, lifestyle or family. I may not look the way I want to look or act the way I want to act.

I may feel stuck in a job I hate...but this is not the end. This is part of the process and I if I keep moving forward the end result will be success.

Choice and process go hand in hand.

Along the road, as you journey on in process you have choice. Lots of choice. You can choose to live in situation that you are currently in or you can choose to change the situation by an act of your will. Process simply means giving time for the end result to work its way in you.

Personally, I am a pray-er. I pray. I seek God for wisdom, direction and strength. He is the source that I go to when things get bad and when I feel overwhelmed with discouragement.

And He reminds me of the process. Life goes on and each day I walk closer to the destiny to which I was called.

So what does this have to do with my Starting A Tea Business (TM)online tea school?

Plenty.

Lately, I have gotten emails from potential students and from former alumni. These letters focus on discouragement.

Things haven't gone as they had hoped. The business got set aside due to family crisis or you find yourself in the middle of a divorce without a vision.

These emails are heartbreaking. The discouragement is real.

And so I have written this response....

If you have a tea business dream hold on. You may not see it but your life is in process. Hold on to your dream.

Take steps toward achieving your dream. Give it space and give it time and your tea business WILL become a reality.

You are only in process so.. hold on and enjoy the journey. You will be amazed at where the current circumstances take you.

The Ultimate Tea Trendsetter- Anna, The 7th Duchess of Bedford

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Some people unknowingly start tea trends. Sometimes, those trends last for hundreds of years, changing society, the economy, and the world. Anna, the wife of the seventh Duke of Bedford, was one such innocent trend-setter.

Imagine sweet Anna beginning her day as all other aristocratic people would in the early decades of the 19th century. In the first light of morning, she drinks some ale. She butters her thick brown bread.

She eats her boiled beef as her breakfast and goes on about her business. Around mid-day, she partakes of a light lunch, maybe consisting of a slice of bread and cheese.

Anna is a busy woman, seeing to her duties as Duchess, socializing with the elite, planning parties and running a household. Her full-course, typical heavy English dinner is not scheduled until 8:00 that evening.

But by 5:00, Anna is famished, her early-morning breakfast eight or nine hours past. Luckily for Anna, who writes that she has “a sinking feeling” around that time of day, her staff attends to her every wish and delivers small servings of bread and butter, cakes, assorted sweets, and tea to her at 5:00.

Whether Anna was hypoglycemic, whether she had an enormous appetite, or whether she was simply able to fill her hunger pangs better than most people, we’ll never know, but she had tea served every day at 5:00.

Since Anna’s world was often built around the social activities of the wealthy, she began to invite friends in for the 5:00 “low” tea. Other aristocratic matrons took note, and soon people were being invited in for afternoon tea all over the country.

But afternoon tea wasn’t the only trend that Anna set. Did you know that it was because of her that men and women began to literally tread a common ground?

As the English fell in love with the ritual of afternoon tea and the inherent socializing that came with it, public areas called tea gardens were opened. Here in the beauty of the outdoors, for the first time, women were able to attend and patronize a public area whether or not they were accompanied by men, and they could do so without criticism! (Thank you, Anna!) Men, women, couples, and children could stroll through beautiful flower gardens, listen to musicians, play cards, or partake of tasty refreshments, all because Anna started a tea-trend!

But the domino-effect of Anna’s afternoon tea wasn’t finished yet. Every waitress or waiter since Anna’s time will be thankful to her when they know how her trendsetting affects their wages!

Anna’s establishment of afternoon tea resulted in the creation of tea gardens where waiters had the benefit of the first tips, a historical precedent that has continued into modern times.

Since the hot water for tea often came from kitchens that were far away, the speed of the server drastically affected the temperature of the water. Patrons to the tea gardens, upon being seated, put coins into boxes labeled T.I.P.S., “To Insure Prompt Service,” thereby encouraging their servers to be speedy and deliver hotter water for tastier tea. Tips are now given to servers as a matter of fact, based on the quickness and quality of the service.

Bless your hungry soul, Anna. Your afternoon tea was just the starting point for trends that have lasted more than a hundred and fifty years.

Corporate Downsizing? Just Pour Yourself A Cup of Tea

By Lady Dawnya Sasse

One of the best ways you can secure your future is by operating your own business. But which type of opportunity should you choose?

One of the fastest-growing industries is tea! Sales are currently billions of dollars annually, so there is no better time than the present to get involved.

With sales expected to reach ten billion dollars by 2010, you can rest assured knowing that you've chosen a solid choice.

Need a guarantee? You can learn everything you need to know through the "Start a Tea Business" program (www.StartATeaBusiness.com).

One of the benefits of starting and running a tea business is that you can do it part time, and even from home!

This means that you can keep your current job while starting your own business. In addition, should your company downsize or cut jobs, you will be in a strategic position to continue and build your business.

Even if company layoffs are not eminent, having a secondary source of income is always a good idea. In addition, of course, there is always the joy of owning and operating your own business, being your own boss, and following your dreams!

A tea business does not have to be an alternate coffee shop on the corner. You can run a home-based business full or part time.

Of course, running a teashop is an option as well, and if you approach it right, you can even do this part time as you grow your business.

Alternatives include a web-based business, tea party consultant, or even a portable tea "bar" much like the coffee kiosk alternatives.

Additionally, you can combine any of these tea business options to create a fulltime dream job! While your co-workers may be stressing out about job cuts, you can be relaxing with a soothing cup of tea as you decide where to take your business next.

People are looking for ways to improve and maintain their health, and tea is one answer. It is a hot business right now, and recent news reports have shown that the benefits of tea are very real.

Additionally, tea parties are especially popular right now as people look for alternatives to standard themes and activities.

Taking your future into your hands is exciting and frightening at the same time. If you have recently been laid off, for example, the idea of starting your own business may seem more daunting than hitting the pavement.

Alternately, those in a seemingly secure position may feel nervous at the thought of leaving it for the dream. However, a tea business can provide not only security, but also peace of mind that is hard to find in the corporate world.

With ongoing reports of corporate downsizing, one of the few ways to feel secure in yourself and your future is to find a way to make a living on your own, and under your own terms.

With a tea business, you can secure your future and take care of your mental, emotional, and financial health.

If you are unsure where to begin, the good news is that there is plenty of information and there are people ready and willing to help! All you need is an entrepreneurial spirit and a bit of guidance.

You can also enter the tea business with a minimal investment, which makes it an even better option for someone who is recently laid off or only wants to start part time. The tools and information are available.

First be sure to get the inside tea training you need.

It is important to understand the mysterious beverage that you plan to base your future one.

Next, you will need a basic understanding of operating a small business, developing a business plan, and ensuring that you comply with state and federal regulations.

This information is readily available, and you may find that the process is not nearly as intimidating as it may first seem. With a bit of research, education, and determination, you can easily change your course from one of insecurity to one of realizing your tea dreams.

The Benefits of Tea

by Dawnya Sasse

Would you like to decrease your chance of getting prostate cancer?

How about reducing your risk of ovarian cancer?

If there’s a chance you could reduce risks of heart disease, would you take it?

How about lowering your cholesterol and boosting your immune system?

All you have to do is drink tea.

Research studies done all over the world suggests that drinking tea, either black or green, can produce amazing results with regard to health and well-being.

Maximum health benefits come from drinking four to five cups of tea per day, a healthy consumption of the liquid that supplies the body with up to 36% of our antioxidant intake.

Antioxidants are responsible for the production of a phytochemical called EGCG. This chemical neutralizes “free radical” oxygen molecules and repairs damages to cells.

The prevention of cancer seems like a huge claim, but more and more research pours in attesting to just such a benefit of tea-drinking. The risks of prostate cancer and ovarian cancer have been found to be lowered by the consumption of tea.

The Journal of Cancer Research found that drinking green tea inhibits both the growth of blood vessels that feed the tumors as well as the tumors themselves.

A University of Wisconsin study related that green and white teas may kill precancerous cells through their ability to stimulate the liver and detoxify carcinogens.

Australia’s Curtin University looked at the tea-drinking habits of Chinese men and Australian men and determined men who regularly drank green tea reduced their risk of prostate cancer by two-thirds.

But the benefits of tea-drinking are not confined to cancer prevention. Tea-drinkers also have healthier hearts.

The University of Wisconsin study connected tea drinking to a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis. A similar study was the Zutphen elderly Study, performed in the Netherlands in 1993 which found that elderly men had a 68% reduction in cardiovascular illness if they drank black tea.

Another finding discovered by U. S. Department of Agriculture research suggested that five servings of black tea per day can reduce “bad” cholesterol by as much as 11.1% and total cholesterol by 6.5% in people with mildly elevated cholesterol readings.

Amazingly, drinking even one cup of tea per day resulted in a 44% reduction in heart attacks, a finding contributed by Brigham Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston after studying 340 men and women who had suffered heart attacks.

The consumption of tea has also been linked to weight loss, improvement of oral health, lowering of high blood pressure and improved alertness and mental health.
If you value your health, it’s not a bad thing to be called a tea-totaler!

Make Your Tea Dream Happen

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Beginning a new business venture is exciting, scary, and comes with the occasional setback. How do you keep going when things feel frightening, overwhelming, or challenging?

Here are some tips to keep you and your dream moving forward.

Focus on Your Purpose

Something drew you to the tea business. You likely have a love of tea combined with a desire to create a health-friendly business, a love of retail, a desire to educate others about tea...the possibilities are endless.

Keep your original motivation at the forefront of your mind as you go about the more difficult aspects of your business. If needed, write it on a piece of paper and hang it in a place where you will regularly read it.

This simple reminder can help keep your motivation strong.

Create Goals

There is nothing so rewarding as setting a goal for yourself and reaching it! Use goals to your advantage.

Set short- and long-term goals consisting of both small and large objectives. Daily and weekly goals keep you focused on the immediate tasks (rather than becoming overwhelmed by everything you need to do) and keep you energized as you continually reach each goal.

As you continue to meet your targets, you are closer and closer to creating your dream business. You also demonstrate to yourself that you are capable and that you can and will reach your bigger goals.

Just Do It

Procrastination or avoidance of the harder things about business can stall or severely limit your business.

If you do the harder things first, you can then reward yourself with the easier and more enjoyable aspects of running a business later.

This self-rewarding practice will help you develop the discipline needed to run a business but also lets you have the fun that keeps you going.

Invest in Motivational Material

A few perfectly worded tidbits of inspiration are sometimes all it takes to keep you going.

Many books are available on motivation as well as numerous web sites and inspirational posters or wall hangings. Find the ones that work for you and keep them close for the times you need that extra bit of support.

Take Time for Yourself

Running a new business is hard. It takes time, energy, and mental focus. If you spend all your time on your business, you run the risk of running yourself too thin. Take time for yourself away from the business to recharge your batteries and prepare you for the tasks ahead.

A Monthly Gift of Tea

by Dawnya Sasse

A Tea of the Month club is the perfect gift for a tea loving friend, couple or for a personal indulgence. If you are considering a tea business, a monthly tea subscription can be a worthwhile investment. Let's take a moment to look at how a tea club works and why it may be good for your business.

1. A Tea of the Month club is offered by a variety of different online tea vendors as well as an assortment of tea rooms around the world. Memberships range from $95- $200 a year depending on the variety and quality of the teas you will be receiving.

Subscribers may choose from tisanes, blacks, greens, flavored or a random assortment of teas picked for you by the purveyor. Once you have decided on the specifics of your subscription , your teas will be mailed to you every month (or every quarter) until your membership runs out.

2. Choose a club where the tea purveyor also sells wholesale. In this way you will be able to sample a variety of tea at a leisurely rate, and when you are ready to purchase wholesale you will know exactly what you like.

Consider these companies:

www.Harney.com

www.Adagio.com

www.Specialteas.com

3. Create your own tea of the month club. Monthly tea clients mean a regular income. Why not develop your own tea of the month club either locally or through the internet.? Some of the greatest coffee houses started in Florida started by offering weekly coffee deliveries door to door. Make this concept work for you!

Consider the subscription concept, subscribe to a number of purveyors and then put your own special twist on an age old concept.

Happy Cupping.

If Tea Rooms are So HOT, Why are they closing?

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Today it happened. The tea rooms in my hometown closed.

There is nothing worse than seeing a place of solace close its doors for lack of business.

A heavy, somber grief came upon me.

How can I teach people about the tea business when the tearooms in my own area are closing?

Well, I had tried...

I visited the tea room owners and offered my services for free. I wanted to help them stay afloat. It was important to me that my hometown have a tearoom.

But when I looked in the owners eyes and I could see it was already decided. It was over. No amount of wishing ,suggestions or encouragement could change things. The war had been lost. The retreat had been sounded.

This leads me to one question: "If Tea is So Hot.. Why Are Tea Rooms Closing?" Here are some thoughts:

It's Business not Pleasure

Owning and operating a tea room has long been an American tradition. Tearooms became popular in the early 1900's providing the first viable "career" for American women.

Tea rooms has long been the stuff of legends and dreams.

Pretty China

Soft Lace Tablecloths

Classical music

AND TONS OF LABOR Intensive WORK.

Unfortunately, most people who start tea rooms know little or nothing about tea, the tea industry and business in general. Often times a tea room owner spends their life savings starting their dream and skimps on little things like a business plan and heavy duty industry training.

You wouldn't wake up one day and decide to open a dry cleaning store if you didn't know anything about how to operate the equipment, get clients, etc. Why would you open a tea room without training?

This remains a tea time mystery.

Capital For the Long Haul

I once had a potential client contact me about starting a tea room. Her first sentences included the fact that she needed money immediately and that she didn't have enough to pay for my course.

Stop right there!

Owning and operating a tea room or a tea bar takes capital. Just like any other business, a tea room requires 3- 5 years of funding.

If you need a salary right now, you should not be opening a tea room. If you can't afford $397 to get training, you can't afford to start a tea room.

Seems basic right?

As the tea industry grows we are experiencing the changing of the guard. Out goes the untrained and unfunded and in comes business minded, highly fluid companies. It is as simple as that.

Progress means change.

Life Changes and Life Style

Owning a tea room is a very personal and very involved undertaking. Often times the owner of a tea room has a health crisis or a family situation which makes it impossible to continue giving themselves to their customers.

In addition, few tea room owners take time to analyze their own personal wants and desires.

Recently, I spoke with a tea room owner who secretly confessed that she "hated her tea room." She said she had opened it only because of pressure from clients in her gift store. "Where are they now?" she wailed.

Good question.

A successful tea room or tea business MUST be based on the owners heart's desire. Think through the process and find what you like and what you hate. Do what you love and avoid what you hate. Its as simple as that.

Marketplace Mania

A change is happening in the tea industry. It's growing up and getting smart. It no longer relies on tea alone to make all the profits. It is looking for friends in the marketplace. Here are some great examples:

Spas and Tea

Florists and Tea

Books and Tea

Music and Tea

or a combination of all of the above. Rent is high. How can you cut down your costs? A successful tea business owner must look to the market place and find help. Pooling customers, sharing mailings and diversifying your offerings is necessary for a tea business to survive.

In Summary, The passing of a tea room is a sad thing. It means that someone's vision has died. But, a seed planted in the ground can still bear fruit.

Learn from the tea rooms of yesterday and make your tea business successful today.

Are You Ready To Be Your Own Boss?

By Abel Cheng

You have this burning desire you want to be on your own. The temptation is so great that you want to quit your job. Enough is enough.

You're sick of working for other people for a ridiculous pay.To be your own boss means controlling your own destiny, having your own time and no bosses to report to.

Basically, you can do whatever you want.

But before you really jump into a new territory of being on your own, you have to make sure that you're ready and well equipped.

Below is the checklist that can help you to ensure that you're ready to be on your own.

1. Have a crystal clear plan.

Do you have a clear idea as to what you want to do next? You must know exactly what your plan is. Is this going to be the same as what you are doing? Or, is it completely different from what you are used to do?

Write down your ideas and evaluate the feasibility of your ideas. Ideally, pick an idea you like most and the most profitable.

2. Have a reserve of 6-12 months.

Before you embark on your journey to be your own boss, you must prepare a fund of at least 6 months' expenses.

I prefer a 12-month fund reserve. The reserve is used to cover your daily expenses while you are just starting out and you receive no regular wages. This reserve is also used to cover unforeseen circumstances that you might be under.

It's extremely important to have sufficient fund as this can remove a lot of stress from you.

3. Support from your partners or friends.

When your plan to be on your own fails or you face a temporary setback, do you have someone to turn to for support?

It's almost guaranteed that you'll be caught in a situation that can force you to give up. This is the time when you need solid support from someone who cares about you.

You need this kind of support to carry on. You need someone to talk your problem out. Identify the person who can give you 100% support while you're on your way to be on your own. The person can be your spouse, partners, close friends or even your mentors.

For me, my wife is the biggest inspiration and supporter. Whenever I feel down, she gives me the courage to stand up again.

4. Tools and resources.

Do you have the necessary resources you need to start out? Can you work from home instead, or you need to rent an office?

Do you need to hire people to help you, part time or full time? Do you need a computer and the relevant software? Do you need any special tool or machine for your business?

If yes, where do you source for it? By asking these questions, you can prepare a list of tools and resources that you need to carry out your tasks more efficiently and effectively.

5. Acquire knowledge.

If you're starting out in a new area, how do you acquire knowledge in this area? Knowledge increases your probability of success and helps you to avoid unnecessary mistakes.

Knowledge can be obtained through government agencies, support groups, workshops, books, the Internet, mentors and coaches.Being on your own can be very challenging. By sharing the information here, it's my hope that you'll have a smooth transition from working for people to being your own boss.

And also to encourage you to take action if you have been contemplating on the idea, but no action is taken yet. I can assure you that you'll never regret of making the decision to be on your own.
