Tea with Queen Mary

by Lady Dawnya Sasse

Queen Mary lived from 1867-1953 and was the consort of George the 5th. Mary, private and shy in public, was known for her spirited teatime which she held daily at the palace and is said to have adored.

Every day at 4 p.m. Queen Mary presided over tea time in Buckingham Palace.

Her formal tea table was set with a silver tea set known to have been a favorite of her mother in law, Queen Victoria.

As her guests watched in awe, Mary would measure her custom made tea blend from a small jade colored caddy and personally brew the tea for her adoring guests. Then the Queen would nod to her footmen and they would fill all the teacups and pass a variety of savories and sweets all around.

On informal daily occasions Queen Mary would often use her favorite teapot made by John Beswick Ltd. and entitled "Sundial."

She chose this pot on a trip to Beswick pottery. From then on the pottery firm always stamped their "Sundial Teapot" to read..."As purchased by HM Queen Mary."

Now how's that for a bit of creative tea business marketing?
